Describe your academic experience:

I completed my BSc (Hons) Psychology and Sociology in 1997. After this time I was employed within the civil service in the Department of Education for 10 years before I decided to return to education to study my teaching qualification. I successfully completed my PGCE in June 2008 and began teaching Psychology and Sociology on the Access to HE programme alongside A-Level at New College Durham.

Describe your role at New College Durham:

I am the Curriculum Manager for Social Sciences and Access to Higher Education, along with Programme Leader for A-Level Psychology.

Why did you decide to teach at the Sixth Form Centre at New College Durham?

I went back to study my PGCE to use my degree in psychology and to get into teaching. This is where my drive is.

What is the best part of your job?

I love teaching. I gain a lot of job satisfaction from seeing students’ progress throughout their A-Levels. I enjoy being able to build a rapport with each student and watch them grow in knowledge and confidence.

What has been your best moment at New College Durham?

Being able to motivate students and their achievements at the end of the year. Being there on results day for AS/A2 students and knowing they have got their first choice university. Witnessing students receiving their offers from university and how excited they are. Being part of this is great and so rewarding.

What inspires you?

Good leadership and a positive attitude towards moving forward. Facing challenges and successful results.
