University of Stirling Biological and Environmental Sciences
The strength of Biological & Environmental Sciences lies in our unique focus on the interface between people and the environment, which positions us well to exploit growing funding opportunities and to develop strong student interest in environmental and ecological systems science and management. Our research interests are broad, ranging from conservation and evolutionary ecology to environmental processes including carbon and nutrient cycling, river geomorphology and ecology, pollution and impact monitoring; and geoarchaeology, environmental history and paleo-environments.
Our researchers seek to understand the fundamental processes driving the evolution and maintenance of biodiversity from the genetic to the ecosystem level, how environments and ecosystems have changed over annual to millennial timescales and to predict and mitigate the future impacts of anthropogenic change and natural hazards. Our findings integrate science, policy and practice; they are used to inform national and international policy makers and practitioners in conservation and environmental regulation, planning and management.
