The Department of Biological Sciences is a modern well-equipped department with its principal focus in the Thomas Building at the centre of the University campus.

Both the teaching and research activities of the Department have been recognised by external agencies as being of high quality.

The Department comprises of specialist, teaching and research laboratories which are suitable for a wide range of activities including animal behaviour, forensic science, genetic analysis, biochemistry, cell biology, immunology, molecular biology, microbiology, food and nutritional analysis and soil analysis.

Biological Sciences provision at the University of Chester has expanded in recent years and we now offer a wide variety of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes of study. These programmes are underpinned by diverse staff research interests which in turn provide exciting opportunities for study leading to MPhil and PhD research degrees.

Both the teaching and research activities of the Department have been recognised by external agencies as being of high quality. The teaching subject review panel identified Biological Sciences as a department consisting of highly motivated staff and having high quality teaching underpinned by research activities.

Despite expansion across the sector we continue to consider the delivery of our programmes to be primarily student focused. In this respect we pride ourselves in maintaining excellence, not only in teaching and research, but in all other aspects of the student experience. As such, we aim to provide our students with a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of each subject including development of key skills.

In addition, we offer significant flexibility thereby allowing our students to study the subjects that interest them most. The Department fully aware that employability is an essential outcome of our programmes and we therefore develop vocational aspects throughout all our programmes.
