UC Finance

Karen Sheldon, Finance Training Manager

As the manager of the team I am responsible for ensuring that the training we provide equips staff with the knowledge and skills to administer the University’s finances appropriately. This includes devising the strategy, designing and developing programmes (both internally and with external suppliers) and ensuring a quality service is provided. I also edit and co-ordinate the publication of the Financial Procedures Manual.

I have been with the University since UFS was introduced (yes I remember CAPSA). During this time I have seen many developments in the Finance Division as well as helping to implement the HR’s CHRIS system. Although no longer in the classroom on a daily basis I still manage to keep my hand by providing cover for the rest of the team and running the fixed asset course. As I’m also the Finance Division’s staff development co-ordinator I have a strong interest in staff development in general and I co-ordinate those studying at a higher level in the Division across a variety of fields that include accountancy, tax, procurement and insurance. In my previous life I spent 9 years with Customs & Excise where I was one of their internal Technical trainers, and dealt with fraud cases as well as auditing both small and large businesses.

Helen Parker, Finance Trainer

I am responsible for the vocational courses, including AAT and CIPS. I coordinate the external training provision used and will be running a number of courses internally for AAT and CIPS/Procurement. We have recently gained accreditation from AAT to run Level 3 in-house as well as the Level 2 bookkeeping and so I will be running and teaching on this programme. I will also be involved in other finance training as necessary.

I have been at the University since May 2013, prior to this I was teaching finance and business at various levels at West Suffolk College in Bury St Edmunds. I trained as a Chartered Accountant with PwC and worked in the Cambridge office as an auditor and in the training department in London.

I have recently completed an MBA and I gained my PGCE teaching qualification while at West Suffolk College.

Helen Maffin, E-Learning Developer

My main responsibility within the Finance Training team is to enhance the training programmes offered by the team using online learning. Our intention is to use technology to make training more readily available, accessible and engaging to staff across the University.

I have a background in eLearning, graphic design and the web and have worked across a broad spectrum of medical education, teacher training, management and staff training programs.

Margaret Peck, Finance Training Assistant

My main responsibilities are dealing with bookings and day-to-day administration within the training office. I also act as an on-line tutor to people undertaking the on-line training. Prior to working at the University I managed the Ofsted Inspector training programme for Tribal Education a professional support services company.
