Enhancing the employability of all students is a key aim of the careers service and institution

What is employability?

There are many definitions of employability. Newman University recognises employability according to researchers for the ESECT (Enhancing Student Employability Co-ordination Team) Project:  ‘A set of achievements – skills, understandings and personal attributes – that make graduates more likely to gain employment and be successful in their chosen occupations’ (Knight and Yorke, HFCE/DfES/ESECT group).

Newman University also recognises employability in relation to the description of the ‘Newman Graduate’ in which students are encouraged to use and develop their skills with a view to engaged citizenship, appropriate employment and economic contribution.

The approach of a formative education and a collaborative approach between the careers service and the curriculum allows students to grow not only to gain employment but to have the capacity to remain employable and manage their career successfully. – The UK’s official graduate careers website.
