Why Study Sport Coaching Science and Tournament Golf?
This degree has been designed to develop your understanding of sport coaching science, with a particular emphasis on improving your performance as an elite level golfer. You will understand the factors that affect performance, and develop strategies to optimise performance on the golf course.
You will gain an understanding of biomechanics, strength and conditioning and sport psychology. In addition to your academic studies you will also enter competitive golf tournaments to continue your development towards becoming a professional golfer. This course has input and hands-on workshops from several leading experts in the world of golf including European Tour professionals and former Ryder Cup players.
You will develop a range of practical skills in the physical and psychological aspects of coaching which you will be able to apply to both your own and other people’s performance in sport, and golf in particular. Several approaches to coaching will be considered, and their suitability to specific situations evaluated. The psychological element of the game is a major factor in performance at elite level. You will understand the psychology of sporting performance and develop tools to be used when you are competing. You will also develop an understanding of the biomechanics of golf, the importance of appropriate strength and conditioning work and acquire a greater understanding of sport at a technical and tactical level. This is vital, not only for optimising performance but minimising the risk of injury, and managing injuries when they occur. You will gain experience from a range of sports, which you will then be able to compare and contrast with golf specific knowledge to enhance your understanding of the principles learned. You will integrate your studies with applying the theory you have learned to your golf coaching, for example you will create a personal performance profile and, with the help of your coaches, choose an appropriate performance enhancement strategy in the preparation for tour module to maximise your performance in the tournament.

The academic timetable includes a dedicated golf programme with planned activities for one day a week. For this you will be able to gain individual golf coaching, high profile guest speakers and the chance to visit some of the countries premium golf facilities.You will also benefit from the expertise of coaches who coach some of the leading players in the region.

You will use the latest technology including Qualysis motion capture system in conjunction with a Kistler force plate at Newman University and have support from leading golf biomechanics company Quintic Consultancy’s golf specific software and putting lab to enable you to analyse the technique of both your long and short game. Playing golf is an integral part of the degree, which enables you to put the theory you have learned in to practice where it matters most – in competitive golf tournaments
Throughout your course the academic members of staff at Newman will be able to provide personal advice and support on areas such as sports psychology, nutrition and strength and conditioning programmes to improve your performance. Putting you skills into practice is a crucial part of the programme and we have relationships with a selection of golf clubs in order for this to be possible for you. We currently work with one of the most established and worldly recognised golf clubs, The Belfry, and as a student on this course you are able to play 7 days per week in order to improve your game. Additionally a strong link with local course Hagley G&CC has been developed as a local training venue, and a series of golf related visits and a residential trip will be included. Students will be able to take part regional and national competitions as an integral part of the programme reflecting on their experiences from a multi-disciplinary prospective
The course is designed to enable you to earn a living from golf. This could be as a professional player, or as a coach or give you an insight into other roles within the game which you could choose to study at postgraduate level. Although the degree does not include PGA accreditation the content of the course exceeds the demands required of the standard PGA qualifications. You will also become aware of the elements of sports science which underpin the principles of good quality coaching.
