Newcastle University NE2 4HH, Founded in 2001, the Northern Institute for Cancer Research is a multidisciplinary research institute. We have a dedicated team of over 200 clinicians and scientists.

In 2009, the Institute was awarded Cancer Centre status becoming the Newcastle Cancer Centre. We’re a centre of excellence working in partnership with local and national stakeholders.

The Institute is a member of the Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre network and aims to take new experimental drugs from the laboratory into clinical trials.

Our research capabilities

Laboratory research is based in the Paul O’Gorman Building and the Herschel Building at Newcastle University.

Our work is focussed on four research themes:

  • Clinical Trials & Biomarkers
  • Adult Cancer
  • Childhood Cancer

Our clinical trials

We conduct clinical research at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, at the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre, the Freeman Hospital (Newcastle), and at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Gateshead).

We’re involved in an extensive programme of UK and European studies, and we are a:

  • Cancer Research UK Phase I/II Key Centre
  • UK Children’s Cancer & Leukaemia Group Centre for Biological and Pharmacological Studies
  • National Translational Cancer Research Network Centre
