Supply Pool

The college currently administers its own supply pool of staff for assignments on a casual basis and is available for individuals who wish to undertake lecturing, learner support or administration work. Opportunities occur across the entire College in  curriculum and in the various administrative centres within the College together with Adult Learning courses at various venues within the local community. Assignments can be as little as a couple hours a week up to full time working and many supply pool staff have gone on fixed term and permanent posts within the College.

Assignments may involve contact with children under 18 or vulnerable members of society, thus under Part V of the Police Act 1997 all individuals engaged in such occupations are required to obtain a certificate of disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service. This must be carried out before any work is offered.

Specific vacancies are advertised in the jobs section of the website or an application pack can be obtained by emailing hrsupplypool@newdur.ac.uk

New College Durham, one of the biggest employers in County Durham, is hosting an event on Wednesday 23 April 2014, 4.00 pm until 7.00 pm, to recruit staff for their Supply Pool.

The New College Durham Supply Pool arranges ad-hoc cover throughout the College. It offers employment opportunities, across a wide range of curriculum areas, for those with teaching qualifications and also for those with industry knowledge and experience who may not have a teaching qualification yet.

In addition to teaching roles there are also support roles including: clerical and administration, gym instructors, technicians, invigilators, life models, classroom support including note-takers, and communication support workers, personal learning coaches (PLC), learning support assistants (LSA), assessors, supervisory/managerial cover, and specialist instructors.

Joanne Harris, Human Resources Manager at New College Durham, said: “We are holding this exciting event to boost the numbers of our internal Supply Pool of staff. Employment opportunities through the Supply Pool can be from as little as a couple hours a week to full-time working and many of our Supply Pool staff have gone on to obtain fixed term and permanent posts within the College.  I would encourage anyone that is interested to come along to the event, it’s a great opportunity for those looking to engage in some teaching or looking to do some temporary support or administration work.”

Hairdressing Lecturer, Judith Palmer, began her career at New College Durham through the Supply Pool.  She said: “I started at New College Durham in 2001 as a Technician in the Hair and Beauty department, and I continued in this role while studying for my Certificate in Education. I was then offered teaching hours through the Supply Pool. In 2005 I had the opportunity to apply for a part-time post in the hairdressing department, which was successful, and additional hours through the Supply Pool allowed me to teach in a full-time capacity.  In 2010 my post was increased to a full-time post and I have continued to teach and develop in this role to-date.”
