Sport Disability Awareness Day

Sports students organised and delivered the Sports Disability Awareness Day at the College to increase awareness, promote disability sports and raise money for two disabled students to attend the Special Olympics in Los Angeles next year.

The Sports Disability Awareness event raised £118 to help Michael MacGurk and Brad Whitfield, who have been selected to play football for Team GB at the Special Olympics. The Special Olympics are being held in Los Angeles in July 2015. These athletes are not funded like Olympic and Para-Olympic athletes therefore the students need to raise £2,500 each.

18-year-old Michael MacGurk from Leadgate is one of 16 young people, nationally, who were chosen to be part of the Team GB football team.  He attends a training session in Stanley every week and regular national training camps.  Michael who is studying Level 1 Certificate in Sport, said: “It means the world to me that the staff and students at New College Durham are getting behind me and my team mates.  I am looking forward to the whole experience of the Special Olympics and hopefully coming back with a medal.”

The Sport Disability event also helped to raise awareness of disabilities and provided able-bodied students with the opportunity to participate in activities such as seated volleyball, blindfold cricket and new age curling, to experience playing sport with a disability.

Simon Fairbairn, Sports Lecturer at New College Durham, said: “We are very proud of the achievements of Michael and Brad and are keen to support them in any way we can.  All of the students and staff that took part in the disability event really enjoyed it and I am sure this is the first of many fundraising event.”
