Dental Nursing

A Dental Nurse supports the Dentist in all aspects of patient care, including the preparation of the Dental Surgery, accurate record keeping and stock control.  In general dental practice they may also carry out reception duties during busy periods, including booking appointments, taking payments while greeting and reassuring patients.

All Dental Nurses must be registered with the General Dental Council and in order to do this they must successfully complete an approved Training Course.  At New College Durham, we have the facility to deliver a training programme which will encompass all the requirements needed for GDC registration as well as offering learner support and guidance to enable each Dental Nurse to achieve their full potential.

Delivery

The apprenticeship programme combines real workplace learning as well as classroom based theory, portfolio building and underpinning knowledge. The course is delivered one day per week at New College Durham and the remainder of the week is spent in the workplace, giving the learners the direct chair side experience needed whilst collecting a portfolio of evidence to prove competence against the criteria of occupational standards.

How much does an apprenticeship cost?

An apprentice costs you very little; employ them for a minimum of 30 hours a week and pay just £2.73 per hour. Your company may even qualify for funding to support with the costs. You do not have to pay for their training – the government pays for that.  The apprentice may already be working within your company, in which case your rates of pay would continue as normal.
