This is NOT an appropriate training course for applicants who wish to teach in Secondary schools or Post Compulsory Education establishments.
Over the one year course, you will undertake University-based learning at Walsall Campus, and you will spend at least 120 days divided between two different schools across the 3-11 age range within the Primary age phase.
Learning is through experience, exploration and research, and is technology supported – you will also be allocated a personal tutor for the duration of the course.
All course modules provide examples of good practice in teaching which you will reflect upon as you develop your own teaching style. You will be expected to participate actively in your own learning and development/.

- Developing Information and Communication Technology Skills for the Primary School Classroom
- Primary English
- Placements in two Primary Schools
- Primary Maths
- Primary Professional Studies
- Primary Science
PGCE: programme structure
Starting in September and ending in June the full-time PGCE is the fastest and most condensed way for non-experienced trainees to qualify.
120 days (24 weeks) of the 36 week PGCE course will be spent in schools.
We try to take your geographical location into account when placing you in schools but our first concern is to ensure that you have a high quality school placement that can provide a range of experiences. Additional training will therefore take place in partner schools other than your ‘attachment’ schools. Support is available from your University Tutor throughout your training, plus from experienced teachers accredited by the University as school based tutors.

INDIA TEACHING EXPERIENCE TRIP 2017

“The trip to India and Dubai organised for the Primary Education students of the University of Wolverhampton was something that I will remember forever. This experience that the course offered attracted me right away as not many University students can graduate leaving their course with an opportunity to work in education internationally.
After two days in Delhi, we started to see just what India has to offer and could not wait to see more of the country and settle into our schools. We travelled up to Jalandhar on the Sunday by train and were about to embark on our journey as teachers at Cambridge International School.
On the Monday, we discussed with the teachers about the particular areas that we wish to teach and get involved with during the following week. We also got a chance to meet some of the students in their lessons and to observe teaching. One thing which stood out for me was the behaviour of the students and their positivity towards education. Every child in the class wanted to learn. This positivity was reflected in the displays in and around the school – something I will use in my future classroom.
During the week, we were able to teach a range of both core and foundation subjects. The experiences that the week gave us has certainly changed us all as young teachers, with us all feeling excited to return to the UK to use some of the amazing strategies that we saw being used.
The memories and the friendships that the trip gave us will stay with us forever. I would like to thank the University of Wolverhampton for this trip and would recommend this experience for any future student at Wolverhampton.”
Successful completion of the PGCE Primary Education course leads to recommendation to NCTL for qualified teacher status (QTS) and will then allow you to take up a teaching post within a primary school.

Following successful completion of this award, you could also use your 60 Masters-level credits towards any of our Masters degrees in the field of education which can be continued within your NQT year.

Successful completion of the PGCE Primary Education course leads to recommendation to NCTL for qualified teacher status (QTS) and will then allow you to take up a teaching post within a primary school. You will be prepared to teach pupils in the 3-11 age range within the primary age phase with alternative education setting enhancement.
This course will provide you with an excellent start to your teaching career as you experience teaching in two separate schools, working with trained school-based tutors to aid your development.
This course leads to recommendation towards the professional qualification of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). The University will recommend students who have demonstrated competence in the Professional Standards to the Teaching Agency – who will award QTS.
The award of QTS is essential to teach in a school in the United Kingdom and on gaining this award the student becomes a qualified teacher.
- A first honours degree of a United Kingdom higher education institution or equivalent qualification (a 2:1 classification or above is expected). Preferably we would like your degree subject to be in a National Curriculum subject.
- GCSE grade 4 (previously grade C) or above in English, Mathematics and Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Combined Science) or equivalent.
Please note we do not accept GCSE Equivalent Tests from other institutions or organisations and be aware that not all equivalency tests are accepted, if you unsure please contact our Admissions Department firstname.lastname@example.org for clarification. You will be required to provide evidence of your original GCSE qualifications.
- We ask for 10 days experience in a UK mainstream primary school, including Key Stages One and Two. This experience must have taken place since January 2015 and must be in a mainstream school. Other educational settings, for example, SEN / Nursery / Sure Start / any form of extra-curricular coaching will not contribute towards the 10 days. This experience in other settings will enhance your application.

Interview and Selection
The interview process for PGCE Primary (x100) 2017/2018 will be in two stages.
First Stage: All applicants that are successful with their application will be invited to complete written audit. These will provide us with some information about your existing strengths as well as indicate any areas where you need to develop your knowledge and understanding. These are for formative assessment purposes only and are not used as part of the criteria in making a decision regarding an offer of a place on the course.
Second Stage: You will engage in a face to face interview; this will provide an opportunity to share your knowledge of the Primary Classroom.

Pre-entry Professional Skills Tests
Applicants for initial teacher training (ITT) courses which begin after 2013/14 are required to have passed the skills tests before the start of the course.
You will not be eligible to register and take the tests until after you have submitted an application for an ITT programme through UCAS Teacher Training.
