The School of Nursing and Midwifery was established in 1995 following integration of the Sheffield and North Trent College of Nursing and Midwifery into the University of Sheffield.

Commitment to development

The School is committed to expanding the range of educational opportunities in all subject groups. We embrace recent advances in problem-based and enquiry-based learning and seek to increase access through a blend of e-learning and distance learning methods, as well as traditional face-to-face contact courses and study days.


Image: booksThe Schools of Nursing and Midwifery, Clinical Dentistry and Human Communication Sciences are delighted to learn that our ratings in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework far exceed our results in the previous assessment.92% of our overall profile is rated world leading or internationally excellent with The School of Nursing and Midwifery sustaining its position in the top third in this unit of assessment.

In total the three schools returned 33.2 staff (with additional staff returned in sociology and modern languages and linguistics). Our grade point average in 2008 was 2.7 (out of 4). In REF2014 it was 3.2. Find out about our Research

Nurse training

The School currently delivers a postgraduate pre-registration programme to enable students to become qualified nurses. This programme is delivered by a wide range of academic staff, honorary lecturers, staff on secondment from the NHS and clinical staff, who all bring a wealth of experience and knowledge. We pride ourselves in providing our students with the skills, knowledge and expertise to develop as safe competent health care practitioners who are fit for practice and purpose.

Consultancy and bespoke education

We are keen to work with service colleagues and employers in partnership to develop programmes of education and development that meet specific needs.

The School is able to use its expertise in training needs analysis, programme and service planning and evaluation, audit and research to assist in the development and delivery of focussed, in-house, education and training.
