Outside the degree programme there are also hundreds of ways in which we can help you develop your interests, insights and critical faculties.

Our core modules in the first year are designed to help you reimagine the ways in which you can read, comprehend and critique poetry and prose. You will also be able to choose from an exciting selection of optional modules, which include Studying Theatre, Introduction to Cinema, Critical Contexts, Introduction to Creative Writing, ‘Early Englishes and Early American literature.

In the second and third years, you’ll study the major periods and writers in English literature from the Renaissance to the Restoration, through the 18th century and Romanticism, to Modernism and contemporary literature.

We offer a vast array of option modules, which may focus on a single author, genre, literary movement or theme. These include: Secrets and Lies: Victoria Life-Writing, Love and Death: The Films of Woody Allen, John Donne, Radical Theory, America & the Avant-Gardes, and The Elegy. You also have an opportunity to take modules in theatre and creative writing

In the final semester all students have the option to write a dissertation, a more substantial research essay devised with a member of the faculty.

Furthermore, there are ample chances to work with the local community through projects such as Storying Sheffield, which empowers local people to tell the stories of their lives.
