University of the Arts Music
School of Music
Jazz and American contemporary music are the foundations of the University of the Arts’ School of Music, especially in our performance, composition and music business degree programs.
In our Jazz Studies programs, you’ll have private lessons, one-on-one with top jazz and contemporary musicians and composers, and perform in many of our 50-plus ensembles that range from our three nationally recognized big bands, to an innovative bucket-drumming ensemble, a 110-voice chorus, a Brazilian samba band, one of our “Studio” series ensembles that focus on an intense recording studio training experience, and more than 20 small jazz groups.
Although our programs of study are firmly rooted in jazz, we embrace all music – from Count Basie to Chick Corea, be-bop to J.S Bach, New Orleans jazz to acid jazz, rock and original music to electronic music. Performing, composing, teaching, music business – you can explore it all in the center of the arts district in a city known for its pioneering roots in American music. Of course, you can also take advantage of one of our four different minor programs and study-abroad opportunities.
Our new and innovative Bachelor of Science in Music Business, Entrepreneurship & Technology is built to prepare students for the global hi-tech music, media, arts and entertainment industries. The job of recording, producing, mixing, marketing, distributing, selling and promoting music and other media is becoming more entrepreneurial than corporate, and this cutting-edge curriculum will provide graduates with the most current and comprehensive skills they’ll need to be successful.
Collaboration and creativity are cornerstones of the School of Music, and our students improvise and collaborate with each other and with faculty across campus, building upon a powerful foundation that includes theory, musicianship, history, music and recording technology, music business, the liberal arts, and entrepreneurial activities, in order to create a style and creative voice that’s all their own. School of Music students are creative problem-solvers who discover, challenge and change as they develop as musicians, artists and educated individuals prepared to take the next step in their exciting careers.
