City has a long and respected history of delivering optical education, originally opening in 1898 as the Northampton Institute before merging with City in 1967.

Since then we have gained a reputation as the capital’s leading institution for optometry teaching and are currently ranked 1st in London by the 2017 Guardian League Table.

Our curriculum is at the cutting-edge of optometry and visual science practice; courses are delivered by a passionate academic team, many of whom are involved in international research. Students benefit from industry standard clinical teaching facilities including our own specialist clinic City Sight. Opened in 2016, City Sight is a fully functional public eye clinic and research centre and gives our students the opportunity to develop their skills working with real patients before they graduate.

We have long established partnerships with the optical sector, undergraduates benefit from clinical placements at Moorfields Eye Hospital, the UK’s leading eye hospital Courses and study

Our BSc (Hons) Optometry degree is ranked 1st for student satisfaction in England*. The course is accredited by the General Optical Council (GOC), meaning on successful graduation and completion of the pre-registration year, graduates from the course are eligible to gain registration with the GOC and practice as a qualified optometrist. As a City student you will benefit from teaching informed by the cutting-edge research from within the Division of Optometry & Visual Sciences, excellent clinical facilities and unique clinical placements.
,br> Our Masters courses are designed to meet the rapidly changing academic, clinical and professional development needs of optometrists working in practice. We are the first university to offer the full suite of Professional Certificates accredited by the College of Optometrists, including Glaucoma, Low Vision, Paediatric Optometry and Medical Retina and the only university to offer the Professional Higher Certificate in Contact Lenses. Courses are offered both as full-time Masters programmes, or can be taken on a module-by-module basis, as part of our CPPD offering.
