Enterprise and Entrepreneurship

The University of Huddersfield prides itself on embedding an entrepreneurial outlook across research, teaching and collaboration to drive forward world-leading research with societal, economic and cultural impact. This work has been recognised in the recent Wilson Review of University Business Collaborations, the Lord Young Review of Enterprise Education and the Witty Review of Universities.

Strategic corporate partnerships

The 3M Buckley Innovation Centre (supported by a £12 million ERDF grant) is home to global companies, SMEs, and start-up businesses, creating an environment which encourages research and collaboration.

The University is a partner of The Prince’s Trust and works to support young people in entering employment or further/higher education.

Collaborating with Siemens AG brings leading international academics together with industry experts. Siemens has donated a £500k Ion Source to the International Institute of Accelerator Applications – the first UK Institute dedicated to this key area of research.

Small business support

The University works with small businesses from start-ups to established companies, covering design, prototypes, marketing, manufacturing and service delivery.

The Enterprise service recently helped MTP Innovations to transform standards of hospital hygiene with a next generation disinfectant, and worked with Paxman Coolers on pioneering scalp cooling equipment to treat hair loss during chemotherapeutic cancer treatments.

Support for students and graduates

Our 2015-2018 teaching and learning strategy includes Enterprising Students as one of its six key themes, explicitly recognising the importance of enterprise education and entrepreneurship support.

We are ranked in the top 10 nationally for undergraduate and postgraduate employability and student placements. The Enterprise Team supports student and graduate businesses through the Duke of York Young Entrepreneur Centre, a range of enterprise-focused degrees and one-to-one and group support to help students develop their ideas and businesses.
