University Of Cumbria Yoga
We are delighted to welcome Sonja Appel back to the studio to deliver an excellent yoga teacher training course in partnership with The Yoga Studio. Janet, our studio owner, completed her 300 hour teacher training with Sonja in India in 2013. You can check out the blog she kept during her time in India on this website, which will give you an insight into what to expect if you embark on this training programme.
Sonja is the founder of Sushumna Yoga and is based in India. She started her journey in yoga with the late Shri Pattabhi Jois from Mysore. Learning the authentic mysore self practice of Ashtanga Vinyasa. She is certified by the ‘British School of Yoga’ in Hatha & Meditation & also certified as a ‘Vibrant Living Teacher’ in Hatha Flow. Having studied intensely, mainly in India, then London she believes that ‘living yoga’ in it’s essence helps to impart her knowledge better and more succinctly. She started practicing yoga eighteen years ago and has sixteen intensive years of experience teaching yoga. She is also registered with Yoga Alliance, E-RYT 200. She has taught over 10 000+ hours of Yoga & Teacher Training. Sonja has devised her own practice in yoga called ‘Sushumna’ which is a carefully worked out vinyasa flow, meditation or pranayama, that allows one to do the practice as a meditation and in the process, this helps to unleash within ourselves, all of our innate, kundalini Shakti. The flow is spontaneous and she mixes up the asanas in interesting ways, with the help of inspiring music, always ending with a deep relaxing meditation (Yoga nidra). As in Ashtanga – drishti, bandhas, ujjayi breath, counting & vinyasa is always employed.

She is also employed as a Reporting Radiographer for North Cumbria Hospitals Trust and teaches CPD for Health Practitioners via two companies.
She completed her PGD in Medical Image Interpretation and has been x-ray reporting for 19 years and is currently completing her dissertation for her MSc.
As if that wasn’t enough she also presents at conferences nationally including recent events at the British Institute of Radiology at Manchester University relating to Forensic Imaging and the Royal Marsden Hospital in London presenting a Thoracic Trauma lecture.
She became involved with Forensic Radiography early in her career due to the Lockerbie Air Crash and has remained actively interested and involved since then. To attempt a ‘beach body’ she enjoys fitness, involving a variety of classes including circuits, bodypump etc . However she only recently discovered the pleasure of Yoga and particularly The Yoga Studio team.
We are delighted that she has taken time out of her busy schedule to deliver anatomy training for this Teacher Training Course.
Meet our Teaching Assistant – Janet Richards
Janet didn’t discover yoga until she was 46 years of age. She was suffering from stress and poor health and turned to yoga as an act of desperation. Slowly she regained her health and control of her life with the help of a regular yoga practice and in 2013 went to India to study with Sonja Appel at Sushumna Yoga. She found this a profound and life changing experience. She has continued her yoga journey training with Lucy Crawford Scott, Karen Kirkness Breneman and Josh Summers.
She is the owner of the successful The Yoga Studio, a small boutique yoga studio and she is delighted to be hosting this event in the historic City of Carlisle in Cumbria.
