Planning permission has been granted for a new sports centre for students and the community, at the University of Hull.

New sports centre at the University of Hull

The centre is part of an investment of close to £16-million in sporting facilities, already underway, which includes the creation of a Football Hub, funded in part with a £500,000 donation from the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund.

The sports centre will house a 12-court sports facility, including international-standard netball courts and bleacher-style seating for 700 spectators. The aim is to make the University the regional hub for netball.

The versatile space will be used for a multitude of sports, including Basketball, Badminton, Futsal and Volleyball, among others.

The facility, being built adjacent to the current sports hall, will also house a strength and conditioning suite plus enhanced changing facilities.

The existing sports hall, which is to become a listed building, will be refurbished to a high standard. It is being turned into a 120-station fitness suite with state-of-the-art equipment and free weights. There will also be a dance studio which can also host fitness classes.

Steve Curtis, Partnership and Project Manager (Sport), at the University of Hull, said:

This is absolutely fantastic news. We pride ourselves in our sporting offer and this investment is transforming our existing facilities for the next generation of students and the region’s community. The new sports hall will be fitted with some of the best equipment, offering some of the finest facilities for our students and community to use. Already work is well under way on refurbishing our artificial pitches and construction of a new pavilion began before Christmas. Our sports teams are already benefiting from these superior quality facilities. We want our students to have the very best experience whilst here at Hull and the money we are investing in these facilities will enhance that experience. We are looking forward to our students enjoying sport and fitness activities in the top quality facilities we are developing.
