NEBOSH Certificate in Environmental Management

This eight-day course (available on a day-release basis) is suitable for managers, supervisors and employees who have responsibility for managing environment issues as part of their day to day duties.

The qualification focuses on international conventions, standards and legislation and environmental management systems. It has been designed to allow candidates to gain a level of underpinning knowledge necessary to help ensure their organisation is able to meet its responsibilities under environmental legislation. Candidates will learn how to carry out environmental impact assessments of their organisation’s activities and be able to identify the range of environmental protective and preventative measures required.

Assessment

Assessment is by means of one written examination at the end of the course and a practical environmental review of the student’s own workplace.

NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety

This is an 18-month course leading to entry to the external examinations of the National Examinations Board in Occupational Safety and Health.

The course consists of three units – Unit A: Managing Health and Safety, Unit B: Hazardous Agents in the Workplace, and Unit C: Workplace and Work Equipment. Units A and B are undertaken in the first academic session from September to July, and Unit C is undertaken in the second academic session from the following September to January.

These courses can be taken separately or as part of the BSc programme in Occupational Safety and Environmental Management.

Duration

The course lasts for 18 months.

Location

The Institute for Chemistry in Industry, Department of Chemistry (Centre No D254), University of Hull, Cottingham Road, Hull, one evening each week plus three block weeks in the first session from September to July.

Start

September.

Assessment

Examinations for the first academic session are taken in January and July (Units A and B).The examination for the second academic session is taken in the following January (Unit C).A workplace-based assignment is also undertaken in the second academic session, with submission in March (Unit D).

Entry requirements

Applicants should normally possess the NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health or another qualification in health and safety at Level 3 or above, although applications can be considered from candidates with similar qualifications and/or experience in the health and safety field.

NEBOSH National Diploma in Environmental Management

This is a one-year course designed to equip people who have experience in occupational safety and health to take on responsibilities in relation to risks of damage to the environment posed by work activities. It can also be taken as part of the BSc programme in Occupational Safety and Environmental Management.

Duration

One year.

Location

Department of Chemistry (Centre No E254), University of Hull, Cottingham Road, Hull, one evening each week plus three block weeks in each year from September to May (with some flexibility for those unable to attend all the sessions).

Start

September.

Assessment

There is one major workplace-based project during the course and one written examination in June.

Entry requirements

Applicants will normally possess a NEBOSH Health and Safety Diploma, a NEBOSH Part 2 Diploma or an equivalent qualification, leading to membership of IOSH to at least Tech SP grade. Candidates with a Level 3 health and safety qualification and a suitable higher education qualification will also be considered.

BSc Occupational Safety and Environmental Management (with NEBOSH)

This is a four-year part-time degree course of interest to safety and environmental practitioners. It builds on the NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety and the NEBOSH National Diploma in Environmental Management with a fourth year set and examined by the University, for the award of a BSc (Hons) degree.Course structure

  • Year 1 – NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice, Units A and B
  • Year 2 – NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice, Units C and D
  • Year 3 – NEBOSH National Diploma in Environmental Management
  • Year 4 Modules on:
    • Law, Professional Ethics, and Health and Safety Management
    • Workplaces,Workplace Equipment, and Occupational Health and Hygiene
    • Environmental Management
    • Disaster and Emergency Management

Four years.

Applicants normally start the programme with the NEBOSH National Diploma, so will normally hold the NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health or another qualification in health and safety at Level 3.
