I unfortunately didn’t have an amazing experience at the short time I was at uni. I wasn’t really keen on the whole set up with uni, I was a long way from home, I’m not a drinker so I therefore don’t go out which was the main thing to do for the majority of people (cant really blame them as that’s what a lot of uni students do and there was barely much to do outside of that). And I personally just wasn’t getting into my course but I think that’s because of the whole ricochet of events that happened before and I think I was depressed so I do think think it was me rather than the uni/course (not Hatfield though, that definitely was bad) So I do think Hertfordshire is a decent uni and it does well to supply it students. one other thing I wasn’t too keen on though in regards to my course of Illustration is that I had to buy every single art supply. This is a given to some extent when doing a Art and Design course as you will have to buy particular materials and other supplies for a specific project or just in general because its useful. But when you have a shop in the art and design building that sells all the art supplies you will need even though they should have some of this stuff already in the class room and not try to get a cheap profit from it when I am already paying £9k a year was kind of a joke. even supplies down to the paper you had to buy I wasn’t really happy about that, at least the lady at the shop was nice!

Job Prospects N/A

How does your uni make efforts to increase your employability (careers department, work placements, transferable skills)?

I wasn’t at Hertfordshire for that long so unfortunately I couldn’t really tell you that much. due to the proximity to London, I think a lot of graduates did get jobs around London but I couldn’t really tell you.

Course and Lecturers

What’s the best thing about your course & lecturers?

Like I said I wasn’t at Herts for that long but the best class I did there was hands down Printmaking Because of the technique and learning involved in it. Other than that you’re just place in a studio.

Student Union

What do you think of your Students’ Union? If you don’t get involved, why not?

The SU was good for what limited supplies they could do. You see, Herts was located in a town with barely anything in it so the SU practically supplies the majority of the entertainment for a student there. The SU had a pub, a club (the only club in Hatfield may I add) and other little things like cafes, events, bus services to take you to London and St Albans. And then all the societies. They did a really good job for the limited entertainment you had there but unfortunately you ended up feeling trapped on the campus but this wasnt the SU’s fault this is more about how bad the town was tbh.

Accommodation

If you live in university halls or private housing, what is your accommodation like?

My accommodation at Hertfordshire was very modern and nice. The only issue with my accommodation was that is was on the ground floor and my room was located right next to the kitchen and my window was facing the busy courtyard (I always had to lower my blinds because of the lack of privacy) so needless to say it was VERY noisy; but I can put this all down to bad luck at the end of the day. Other than that issue the rooms were nice (albeit a bit on the small side) a nice double bed with lots of compartments in the room and a decent en-suite bath room although the floors always got wet due to there not being a proper divider on the shower. The kitchen/Living space was decent too. We had a widescreen tv, leather couches and a lot of space to cook ( we had like about two cookers, two fridges ect for a flat of 8) and obviously a dining table, it was a decent sized area. So over all the flat I was in (bearing in mind this is for the new flats, I was in Bellingham court. This was a different story for the older flats) was very nice, clean and modern and convenient with its compartment space and comfy beds. Only down side to it was the price which was around £700 a month but I guess that’s what you pay for premium flats and that it was so noisy especially where I was placed but I’m not blaming the flat for that, that was mainly due to inconvenience and the environment.

Uni Facilities

How good are your university’s facilities?

They were good, cant say too much as there was ALOT of facilities but yeah, overall decent, couldn’t really complain.

City Life

What’s the city life like?

Bad. This is the major problem with Hertfordshire the town it’s located in Hatfield. If only it had decided to place its self else where but oh well, that’s a hard thing to change. There is literally nothing to do in Hatfield and not only that its not a very nice place to be living. The only places worth going are The Galleria and even then its not your typical shopping centre as its an Outlet so get ready for a lot of kitchen supply shops, no seriously. it does however have a cinema and a few good places to eat( there seems to be some decent eateries just out side the galleria to, near the De Havilland campus) so it has that going for it there are also some good outlet shops like Cadbury’s and TK Max and CEX but its not a shop till you drop situation and similar to Uni of Herts SU the place does try its best to make the place better by holding events and having little Italian food stalls on the weekend but because of the place its surrounded by it feigns interest quickly. The next place worth going to in Hatfield is the ASDA because where else are you going to do your food shop? The next place worth going to by the looks of it is Hatfield house, another place that seems to hold all kinds of events but alas its surrounded by Hatfield. I did try to get in but you need some kind of pass which was lame but oh well. Obviously the Uni is worth going to because Its probably the most entertaining place to go to in the whole of the town. The last place worth going to is the train station because it gets you out of the place. With all of the good aspects of Hatfield out the way, you are left with a run-down and depressing looking town where you are grasping at straws on what to do there.

Clubs and Societies

What are the clubs and societies like?

The societies were very good for what I saw of it, due to my lack of time there though unfortunately I didn’t want to commit to any of them as I knew I would be dropping out. The into to the Drama society was very fun and engaging and the Pokemon society I went to was very nice and welcoming. So overall what I saw was good and had a nice atmosphere to both of them.

Student Support

How good is the support offered by the uni? Think both academic (tutors/feedback) and personal (counselling, etc).

I wasn’t really there for that long to really know but were at least helpful for when I was dropping out.

Giving back N/A

How much does your uni give back to the community (think global and local), do any projects stand out?

cant really say for sure but I think they did do local things within the community a fair bit. Although I have heard rumours where there are feuds where the towns folk arent too keen on the students because they feel that the uni/students have ruined the town (the student mainly stick to the campus FYI because there’s nothing to do in the town.)
