PGCE and ProfGCE in Primary Education

About the course

This programme is available to UK/EU students only.

This programme offers Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) for the 3-11 age phases in primary schools with a choice of school placements in Foundation/Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 1/Key Stage 2.

The programme comprises of taught sessions at the University and school-based training.

The PGCE Primary programme is structured to allow you to develop the skills required by primary teachers to teach the full range of National Curriculum subjects, with a strong emphasis on English and mathematics, and to develop specific expertise for making a distinctive contribution to primary practice. It also prepares you to meet the needs of individual learners by developing your awareness of child development, diversity, special educational needs and disabilities, behaviour and learners with English as an additional language.

The PGCE programme is an intensive course which should not be undertaken lightly. It requires a good deal of physical and emotional resilience to complete successfully. You need to be sure that you can meet the demands of the course and that the ethos and working style of the University of Hertfordshire suit your style of learning.

School-based training will take place across the 3-7, 5-11, or 7-11 age ranges depending on the pathway selected. At the end of the course, you will be qualified to teach across the 3 – 11 age range. The pathway you choose affects the schools in which you are placed for training.

This is a full-time, 1 year programme. (5 days a week attendance).

The PGCE is offered at master’s level and the 60 M level credits gained can be accredited towards a master’s degree, via our MA/MSc programmes. Those who achieve at Level 6 will be awarded the Professional Graduate Certificate in Education.

Entry requirements…

2017 entry 

Honours degree (2.2 or higher), awarded by a UK university or an overseas award recognised as equivalent by NARIC

Maths, English Language and Science GCSE Grade 4 or above (Grade C or above under the old grading structure).

All students from non-majority English speaking countries require proof of English language proficiency, equivalent to an overall IELTS score of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each band. For country specific qualifications, please visit our Your Country page.

If offered a place, you will need to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) barred list and criminal records check, and a Declaration of Disqualification by Association, and you are required to respond to targeted and relevant health questions (NCTL – 0097-2015).

You will also be required to pass the Professional Skills tests in literacy and numeracy before starting the course.

Personal suitability for teaching is important and is assessed at interview. Five(5) days recent (within the past year) work experience in a state primary school is essential before application, in order to complete specific classroom-based tasks and obtain a brief statement from the school. Download task details.
