Hertfordshire plugs into new E-Car hire club

17 January 2014

A new, entirely electric, pay-per-use car club has launched at the University of Hertfordshire, providing staff, students and the local community with a convenient and environmentally friendly travel alternative that removes the costs of owning and running a car.

The first

The University’s Environment and Sustainability team has partnered with Source East (the region’s electric vehicle recharging network) and E-Car Club (the UK’s first entirely electric pay-per-use car club) to run the scheme, which offers three electric cars to hire by the hour from either the University’s College Lane or de Havilland campus via a membership programme.

Proud

Dr. Stephen Boffey, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Regional Affairs at the University of Hertfordshire said: “The University is always looking at ways to improve the travel choices for staff, students and the local community and we are proud to be the first university to launch an electric car club. We hope that by offering access to a low carbon form of transport, we can work together to reduce the cost and environmental impact of each journey undertaken.”

Christopher J. Morris, Development Director, E-Car, said: “We are delighted to be launching this scheme in partnership with the University of Hertfordshire and Source East. A first for the UK, we’re confident the programme will not only reduce transport emissions and costs for the community, but provide a convenient, flexible and affordable transport option for University staff and students.”

Membership

Anyone over the age of 19 can register for E-Car membership and all registrations before 28 February 2014 will receive a 50% discount on the membership fee and one hour free driving credit using the following promotional code: ‘UHECAR114’. For more information, visit www.e-carclub.org.

Electric car club

The University of Hertfordshire is the first UK Higher Education Institute with an electric car club.

How does it work?

E-Car Club have a fleet of brand new electric vehicles dotted around campus at the University of Hertfordshire, which can be hired by the hour.

The vehicles are specially adapted to include a Radio-frequency identification (RFID) card access system, meaning the cars can be booked online, or via the E-Car Mobile app, 24/7, 365 days a year. They can also be used by several different people throughout the day at a cost of just £5.50 per hour, or £45 for 24 hours.

The cars can be booked for any length of time (minimum of one hour), and as they’re completely electric, there are no additional fuel costs to worry about. Insurance is even included in this price, and both Young Drivers (19+) and International Driving Licences are welcome.

Our vehicles

E-Car Club’s award-winning Renault ZOE hatchbacks have an average range of 70-90 miles per charge. Which covers the vast majority of day to day journeys. However, should E-Car Club members wish to travel further afield, all our vehicles come with a charge card which grants access to a selection of charge points across the UK.

Where are the cars located?

The cars are located in electric car bays in both the de Havilland Campus & Forum car parks, these spaces were provided by University of Hertfordshire as part of their work to support green travel around the University.
