The University of Greenwich is fully enabled for eduroam, both as a home site and as a visited site.  This means that University of Greenwich staff and students can use their own credentials to get internet access at all other participating institutions, across the globe, and that users from participating institutions can get internet access when visiting any of our campuses.

Wherever you see the eduroam wireless network, you can connect using your full username@gre.ac.uk and password.  You can find a list of participating institutions here

Any issues experienced with eduroam should be reported to your own IT support staff, so for University of Greenwich users, you should always contact the IT Service Desk.

How do I connect to eduroam? (CAT files)

For the most reliable wireless connection, we recommend that you install a special eduroam setup file, known as a CAT file, on your device.  The CAT file will make all the changes your device needs to connect to the eduroam service at the University of Greenwich.

You can install the CAT file before you arrive at university, so that you are ready to use wireless from day one, or will need to use another network (eg 3G /  4G / The Cloud) if already on campus.

You can  download the CAT file for your device from the eduroam website.  The CAT website should automatically detect the operating system you are using and give you a link to download the appropriate configuration tool. Use the ‘All platforms’ link to find configurations for alternative operating systems.

Follow the instructions and remember to include @gre.ac.uk in your username.  For example, if your university username is 123456, your eduroam username will be 123456@gre.ac.uk

Generic Service details to help setup any client

SSID

The SSID is eduroam in lower case.

Wireless type

The device must support WPA2-Enterprise.

The security of the network should be set to  WPA/TKIP  or WPA2/AES (which may be called WPA2-Enterprise on the device). (Most clients will automatically detect the correct settings)

The EAP type is ‘PEAP’, and if asked for a sub authentication type use EAP-MSCHAP v2.

Connecting to eduroam can be completed in five easy steps:

  1. Go to Wi-Fi settings on your device
  2. Select eduroam from the list of wireless networks
  3. It will ask you to enter your University username followed by @gre.ac.uk.  For example: 123456@gre.ac.uk
  4. Enter your University password
  5. Accept certificate if prompted

That’s it!  You should now be connected to eduroam and be free to use the Wi-Fi around the campus.  You will need to repeat these steps if you change your password.

Regulations

Before connecting to the network, you should familiarise yourself with the regulations for computing use at the University of Greenwich. You are reminded that when using the University of Greenwich computing facilities you are bound by the regulations for the Use of Computing Facilities at the University of Greenwich. While using the eduroam  service you are also bound to the JANET Acceptable Use Policy.

University of Greenwich staff and students connecting at a different University must also abide by the regulations and acceptable use policy of the site you are visiting.

GreenNET

The main wireless network for University of Greenwich staff and students to use is GreenNET. Connection to the network is encrypted and so you need your computing User ID and password to connect. Once you are connected you will be able to access web e-mail, web or ftp based file stores and any other web applications such as VLEs (Virtual Learning Environments) and Portals. You will not be able to access local facilities such as applications, printing, etc.

Staff will however be able to connect to the remote desktop service which will give you access to your University home area and some specific pieces of software, unfortunately this service is not currently available for students. Details on how to connect to the remote desktop are located here.
