The University of Greenwich has been making waves across the pond thanks to staff who have been working hard to promote the university in America.

Greenwich signed a new study abroad agreement with the State University of New York at Canton (SUNY Canton), a college which is part of the State University of New York system. Students from SUNY Canton and throughout the larger SUNY university system can opt to spend a semester or year at Greenwich and transfer the credits received towards their degree in the US.

Aisling Conboy, Study Abroad and Exchange Coordinator, is delighted with this new link. She says: “This agreement will mean that potentially any student from SUNY’s 64 campuses can come to study at Greenwich. We look forward to working with colleagues at SUNY Canton and developing further links between our institutions. Both universities have a lot in common and value excellence, sustainability and diversity.”

The university has organised a Thanksgiving dinner at Bodean’s BBQ restaurant in Clapham for this evening (Thursday 22 November). This is the university’s second Thanksgiving dinner and is a chance for all students and staff to get together and celebrate the North American holiday. This autumn, there have been several recruitment and study abroad fairs, as well as visits to high schools and universities in New York, Illinois, Colorado and California. The university also recently hosted an alumni gathering in New York City.

Dr Emrys Jones, Lecturer in English, attended the study abroad fairs. He says: “It’s really exciting to see Greenwich’s profile rising in the States. In the wake of the Olympics, American students are eager to study in London, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see how they respond to the quality and range of our programmes, and our beautiful campuses. We’re in a great position to build an ever larger and happier community of American students at our university.”
