Students’ Union

The Students’ Union is at the heart of student life at the University of Greenwich – a key element in your student experience and the best way to get to know other students and take on new responsibilities.

Whether you play sport or serve on a society committee, perhaps write articles for the magazine or broadcast your own radio show, or get elected as an officer (maybe even President), there are endless opportunities for you to get involved with your students’ union.

SUUG

Students at the Greenwich, Avery Hill and Medway Campuses are all represented by the Students’ Union University of Greenwich (SUUG). In addition, at the Medway campus there is a partnership between SUUG & Kent Union called Greenwich & Kent Students’ Unions Together (GK Unions) in operation, which provides additional student-led services and activities to students on campus.

Democracy and representation

The Students Union is a democratic organisation run by students for students. Cross-campus elections are held every academic year, so the students can choose their representatives for the coming academic year. The Students’ Union Elections are your chance to get involved and make a difference. The Students’ Union is your Union. Elected officers play a big part in ensuring that the Union operates in the way you want it to, campaigning for what you want.

All University of Greenwich students on the three main campuses can stand and vote in the elections. Overall, there are 21 positions that go up for election every March. These are:

  • Four full-time Sabbatical Officers (paid portfolio-based)
  • Eleven part-time Officers (unpaid portfolio-based)
  • Six NUS Delegates

The Sabbatical Officers and Part-Time Officers are joined by 16 Faculty Officers (elected through Faculty-wide elections in October) and ten representatives from Sports Clubs and Societies to form Student Council. The Student Council provides democratic leadership and oversight of the Union.

Read more on SUUG’s Get Involved webpage.

(Please note – Partner College students may not vote in elections and will be subject to their colleges’ arrangements for democracy and representation).

What’s on?

In the Students’ Union bars and cafés you can relax, meet friends and get to know new people. Each venue has its own unique atmosphere and offers regular entertainment, from comedy nights, quizzes and karaoke, to seasonal events and charity fundraisers. The academic year kicks off with Freshers’ Fortnight to welcome new (and old) students. Events include activity days, themed nights and Freshers’ Fairs, where you can sign up to clubs and societies, and grab a bag of freebies! The year ends with the Summer Ball, a chance to dance the night away in a location that’s just right for you. Clubs and societies also organise activities for their members in union venues.

The Advice Service

The Students’ Union is a source of help and support, and employs a team of professional student advisers. Advice covers finance, accommodation and academic support, as well as many other aspects of student life. Further information can be found on the Advice Service in Greenwich, Avery Hill and Medway.

Give It a Go

If you’re still not sure that the Students’ Union is providing what you want, you can always tell them via their feedback form or try something new under their Give It A Go programme. There are lots to try there, including volunteering opportunities that can boost your CV as well as giving you the chance to meet new people.
