Teaching and Learning

We see it as our duty to provide students with the most inspiring, rewarding and well-rounded University experience possible. This means ensuring that students achieve the best grades they can, but also helping them to engage with the ideas that underpin their subject, to master the skills that their studies cover, and to enjoy putting their studies into practice.

We believe that University should be an exciting and challenging experience for students, and we are constantly integrating new ideas and new technology into our teaching. We supplement lectures and tutorials with a wide variety of other learning and practice methods, including subject-specific work placements, special projects and creative work.

Student Experience and Employability

We are proud of our consistently high student satisfaction ratings. Our Law and Maths programmes are consistently rated no. 1 in London for Student Satisfaction by the Complete University guide, but student satisfaction and engagement is a priority and a strength for all our programmes.

Welcome to the Faculty of Engineering & Science

“The Faculty of Engineering and Science is responsible for the majority of the academic provision of the University of Greenwich at the Medway campus. The faculty includes the academic disciplines of Engineering, Science and Pharmacy, as well as the Natural Resources Institute (NRI).

The faculty is distinctive in that it shares a number of its facilities with its immediate neighbours; the University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University, including the library, some teaching space and catering facilities. The three universities work in collaboration under the auspices of the Universities at Medway partnership.

It is an objective of the faculty to attract high caliber academically able students from a broad range of backgrounds. The aim is to provide students with a first class education, delivered using state of the art facilities, coupled with an excellent learning experience.  Students are inspired and motivated through a hands-on “learning by doing” approach to the teaching of the engineering and science disciplines.  Research-informed teaching is supported and enhanced by the latest innovations in IT, both for classroom and laboratory teaching, encouraging students across the faculty to manage and take ownership of their own learning experience.

Students are nurtured and supported to achieve their maximum potential. Students will be mentored and encouraged to undertake employment placements and will be nurtured to become ambitious, confident individuals, having developed the skills required to apply for, and secure, the very best science, engineering and pharmacy graduate level jobs.

All staff and students in the faculty will benefit from a strong research culture, which will inform our teaching and at the same time interface with a range of national and international bodies and organisations to solve real world challenges.

The faculty embraces the opportunities provided by the inclusion of the NRI into its structure. NRI is a unique multi-disciplinary center of excellence that has an established reputation for delivering high quality research, advice, teaching and training in support of global food security, sustainable development and poverty reduction.  NRI has the capability to realise its ambition to be a leading European center of excellence in its fields of research: it is already internationally recognised in several areas such as integrated pest management, root and tuber crop research, trade and development and overcoming post-harvest losses.

The faculty also works with, and supports, the Medway School of Pharmacy to foster new teaching developments and innovations and will develop platforms to share good practice in teaching and learning.

The Faculty of Engineering and Science’s ambition is to be an energized community where inspirational learning and impactful research befits all who engage with it.  We fully acknowledge that the external environment is an increasingly competitive and challenging one.  It is therefore by placing absolute excellence at the heart of everything that we do that the Faculty of Engineering and Science will meet the challenges and deliver its goals over the next five years.”
