Use University-based resources

The Careers Service advertises part-time work for students and graduates via the online vacancy system.

There are a wide variety of jobs available to you including:

  • On-campus work including student brand ambassadors, Open Day guides and library support staff
  • Off-campus work including city-based retail, hospitality, call centre and interpreting work

The SRC Job Shop is a useful resource as it specialises in advertising part-time job opportunities that are suitable for employment alongside a degree level programme of study.

Be proactive

  • Check out your local newspaper for part-time jobs. In Glasgow you can find job adverts in the Evening Times (Monday papers) and the Daily Record (Thursday papers). You can also find adverts in free local newspapers such as Glasgow Westend Extra.
  • Shops, bars and restaurants often recruit by putting adverts in their shop windows. Other employers will advertise on their own websites.
  • You can also try a speculative approach by handing in a CV and covering letter directly to a potential employer who is not currently advertising vacancies.

Part-time jobs

Whether you work part-time in a shop or restaurant, or find work directly related to your degree, you will develop key transferable skills that will help you build an interesting CV and attract future graduate employers.

Student at an employer's stallIf you are a UK or EU student there are no restrictions on the number of hours you can work alongside your studies, but be sure to strive for a manageable balance with your academic work.

If you are a student from outside the EU, you can work for a maximum of 20 hours per week during term time and up to 40 hours per week during vacations (visa allowing).

For more information on working during your studies as an international student, see our information on UK visa regulations.

Where to look

Glasgow is teeming with shops, bars, restaurants, call centres and other staple employers of part-time staff. However, competition can be tough – there are around 65,000 students in the city and part-time work that fits in with a degree is highly desirable.

Don’t be afraid to look for work outside of the immediate West End area – the more you can move around the city, the more options will be open to you.
