University of Exeter Mathematics

Mathematics at Exeter combines a breadth of academic expertise with a caring and supportive learning environment. We provide high quality teaching, supervision, pastoral care and learning opportunities designed to challenge and bring out the very best of our students’ intellectual and personal skills.

We offer a wide choice of degree programmes for undergraduates, including single discipline and a variety of exciting combined programmes. Our unique four-year MSci programmes offer named specialisms in Climate Science, Mathematical Biology or Business and Finance.

For postgraduates, we offer a range of innovative taught programmes and an MPhil/PhD in Mathematical Sciences.

Research in Mathematics is organised into four internationally competitive research groups, addressing a range of topics in Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics and Statistics:

  • Centre for Geophysical and Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics
  • Centre for Systems, Dynamics and Control
  • Exeter Climate Systems
  • Pure Mathematics

Our research also plays a key role in the University’s Science Strategy, via the Climate change and sustainable futures research theme.

Research-led teaching in a supportive learning environment

  • 100 per cent of our Applied Mathematics research and 95 per cent of our Pure Mathematics research was classified as being of international quality in the latest Research Assessment Exercise (2008).
  • We have a significant partnership with the UK Met Office, with joint professors and projects in Mathematics of Climate.
  • Our academics are committed to supporting all students in fulfilling their academic potential and we achieved a 91% rate for Overall Satisfaction in the National Student Survey.

Teaching and research facilities

  • We have recently completed a £3 million investment in the College, including refitted lecture theatres and teaching spaces with the very latest in presentation and teaching equipment.
  • The multi-million pound investment also includes major expansion and upgrading of undergraduate computer facilities with a flexible teaching unit comprising 100 workstations
  • We offer wireless networking in most areas.
  • Our newly refurbished Learning Resource Centre is a great location for both private study and group project work.
