ESSEX BLADES Women’s Football Club

We are a friendly sociable club who welcome players from all abilities, experience and nationalities. This year we have TWO teams catering for all players, with 1st team competing in the BUCS Southern Tier 2B league and our NEW 2nd team competing in the BUCS Southern Tier 4B leauge.

Even those who aren’t looking to compete competitively are welcome to join and take part in fun sessions and the Just Play social league as well as social events outside of the sport!

We have regular training sessions so each player is able to improve their game.

With the England Women’s team making history at the FIFA Women’s World Cup what better time to join a Uni football team!

Let’s kick some balls!

Women’s Football Win Over Essex

University of East London’s women’s football team defeated University of Essex 8-2 in the cup on Wednesday. The home side set up in a 3-5-2 formation, and used the ball-playing abilities of their back three as the basis of their possession-orientated, with a clear emphasis on playing out from the back in order to keep the ball and create chances further up the pitch.

The pace and skill of striker Otesha Charles became too much for the Essex defence to handle, as a host of chances fell her way in the first half, both before and after the one she converted on 20 minutes. Ten minutes later, and UEL doubled their lead through a Katie Donohue free kick. After a number of saves denying Charles her
second of the game, Essex pulled one back with a wonderful strike from outside the area that found the top corner. However, UEL restored their two goal advantage by half time as they finished off a good team move to make it 3-1.

UEL continued their dominance in the second half, as Charles tucked home her second of the game after capitalising on a rebound from the keeper early on, and picked up her hat trick shortly after with a cool finish. Despite a missed penalty by UEL, they maintained their impressive standards throughout the half and this was reflected through the scoreline. Wing-back Daisy Davis scored a delightful curling shot from distance to make it 6-1, and it was soon 7-1 when Charles turned provider to set up Jay Blackie for her first of the match.

Essex did manage to grab a consolation goal from the penalty spot, but this didn’t phase UEL as Charles capped off her brilliant performance with her 4th goal of the game, nodding a corner home from close range to make it 8-2, and send UEL through.
