ESSEX BLADES Men’s Basketball

Basketball is now a performance based sport at Essex and is also FREE. Purchase or Renew your membership for 2016/2017 NOW!

Basketball is a fast-paced, fun, indoor sport that you will not regret joining this year. We have two teams, competing in the BUCS 1st & 3rd division respectively. There are also weekly Just Play sessions during term which are aimed at providing a social atmosphere where players of all different abilities can enjoy quick games together. These sessions have produced talent in past years and have continued to add to the social aspect of Basketball due to the orientation around fun in them.

In the 16/17 season the 1st Team narrowly missed promotion into the premier division and also made it to the semi Finals of the SE Conference Cup. The 2nd team also enjoyed a highly succesful season in which they achieved promotion after an undefeated run.  the Club is looking for new and ambitious players to join both teams in the upcoming 16/17 season.

We play highly competitve Basketball on the court and bond as a squad in the various social events we hold and attend throughout the year. The social aspect of basketball creates a scene in which members have fun, gain new experiences aswell as making new friends throughout the course of the year. We are also one of the most diverse clubs on campus, with players from a wide range of different cultures/languages all with the same passion for basketball .

You can find more information about the club on Men’s Basketball facebook page.

GB Basketball is bringing its Under 20 training camps to the University’s Colchester Campus this summer.

The elite young men and women will be making full use of the University’s sports facilities and expertise as they prepare for the European Championships in July. The University has invested heavily in its basketball programme and is attracting talented young players from around the world through its attractive sport scholarship programme.

Mark Lloyd, the University’s Basketball Performance Coach, who also manages the GB senior men’s team, said: “It’s fantastic that the Great Britain U20 teams are coming to undertake their preparation camps here at the University. We have excellent facilities and resources that will help shape the best possible preparation for their European Championship campaign.

“With our own ‘Performance Basketball Programme’ being launched this summer it really is an exciting time for the sport at the University and in the East of England.”

National Teams Director Warwick Cann said: “British Basketball is pleased to be offered the opportunity to base the U20s programmes at the University of Essex. We think it’s a great venue because it has all the facilities to run a high-performance programme.

“The expertise of the university staff offers another compelling reason to base the camps there and we are looking forward to our stay.”

The Under 20s men’s team head to Crete in July where they face Latvia, Hungary, Greece and Lithuania in Group with the top three going to the next phase.

The women’s team will be playing their Division B games in Sofia, Bulgaria in July. Their round robin format sees them facing Bosnia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Germany, Romania, Portugal, Israel, Lithuania and Norway over a ten-day period. The top two teams will be promoted to Division A.
