Prior to joining the University Edinburgh, Dr Xi Liang was a Lecturer in Energy Policy, University of Exeter. He holds a PhD degree (in energy policy and finance, cantab), two masters degrees (in management research and in process technology), one Diploma of Imperial College (DIC) (in Energy Technology for Sustainable Development) and a bachelor’s degree (in electrical and electronic engineering).

Dr Liang has rich experience in asset management and investment advisory. He previously worked for investment management and advisory firms in China and has been actively participating in project investment advisory activities in energy sector. Dr Liang holds CFA and FRM and he is a regular member at CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) institute, CFA China, a chartered member (MCSI) in CISI (Chartered Institute of Securities & Investment) and also a member of GARP (Global Association of Risk Professionals). He is also the secretary of China Low-carbon Energy Action Network (CLEAN), and an associate researcher at Electricity Policy Research Group at the University of Cambridge.

Research interests

He started his interdisciplinary research career at Imperial College London. His main research area was on valuation of flexibilities in energy projects and energy systems, incentive schemes design for greenhouse gas mitigation in the UK and China, and financing and risk management issues of emerging low carbon technologies. He has conducted a large number of studies on the economics, policy and finance of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies.
