University of Edinburgh Library Hours

Opening hours and staffed hours of the Main Library, George Square, Edinburgh EH8 9LJ

Main Library is open 24/7

20 March – 23 December 2017

The University’s Main Library is open 24/7 from 20 March 2017.

The new opening times will provide students with a staffed, secure and accessible environment for individual study, or to host group study sessions.

Three levels of the Library will remain open to students all night – the lower ground, ground and first floors.

At midnight, students working on the other floors will be invited to move to lower levels. The upper floors will re-open each day at 7.30am.

A tannoy announcement will be made 30 minutes and then 15 minutes before the upper floors of the library close.  Users are asked to co-operate with library and security staff in clearing the upper floors promptly at closing times.

The cafe space will also be open as study space during the night during semester time. Opening times can be found below.

The open access computer spaces in Hugh Robson building and High School Yards will close at 10.00pm and re-open at 7.30am daily.

Access is via swipe card. Please note that further study space is available throughout the University.

Out of Helpdesk staffed hours access to the Library building is only guaranteed for swipe card holders. Those with day passes, external borrowers cards and reference cards are allowed access at the Library’s discretion.
