World Class Future ScienceNorfolk is home to a cluster of internationally-renowned research organisations. They are working together to tackle the major challenges facing all of us in the 21st Century – the sustainability of our environment; our food supplies and healthy ageing. There are over 2500 scientists working to find realistic and practical solutions; who then have the infrastructure and support to translate these discoveries into commercially successful business.

Opportunities to join our research can be found via the project links below. In addition, details of the research performed across the School of Environmental Sciences can be found on our research page and prospective students are welcome to contact supervisors in whose research they are interested to explore the opportunities. Staff research pages can be viewed via the School web pages at the address above where contact details can also be found. Prospective students are also welcome to contact for further information about Research Degrees at UEA.

As a postgraduate research student you will receive research training and will also develop your personal and professional skills – both are key to becoming an effective researcher and to making a successful transition into your future career, whether within or outside academia.

The Science Faculty has a new Graduate School which has developed a Personal and Professional Development (PPD) training programme to provide and support your training from the start to the finish of your research degree.

For further details of our unique and extensive PPD training programme, please see

As part of the Norwich Research Park, which includes the John Innes Centre, the Sainsbury Laboratory, the Institute of Food Research and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital Trust, the School of Biological Sciences offers an outstanding environment in which to carry out research across the whole of the life sciences.Currently the Norwich Research Park houses over 300 research postgraduates in the life sciences. Research in the School is supported by grants and contracts of ca £34 million and the School’s laboratories most of which have recently been refurbished are equipped to the highest standards. We have strong collaborations with our other affiliated institutes which include the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS) and the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO).

Research in the school is organised into four general themes: cells and tissuesmolecular microbiologyplant sciences and organisms and the environment. We offer a range of postgraduate research courses which will enable you to follow your interests to a high academic standard.

We offer two streams of competitive studentships that are fully funded. The Biological and Biotechnological Research Council (BBSRC) supports the excellence in bioscience in the Norwich Research Park (NRP) by awarding a number of studentships to the School of Biological Sciences through its Doctoral Training Programme (BBSRC NRP DTP). Similarly the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) supports the School with competitive studentship opportunities in the area of environmental biology. Opportunities for studentship in the School of Biological Sciences funded by the BBSRC NRP DTP or NERC EnvEast DTP are listed below together with further opportunities concerning students who have their own funding.
