Recognised as a leading department within the UK (ranking first in the UK for overall satisfaction in the National Student Survey 2016), History at UEA has a chronological range from the collapse of the Roman empire to the present day, a geographical scope covering Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, North America and the Caribbean, and experts in political, economic, social, cultural, environmental, diplomatic and intellectual history. Watch our video here.

Teaching

History at UEA is ranked Top 15 in the UK, according to the 2017 Guardian University Guide. The diverse range of modules available allows our students to specialise in periods (medieval, early modern or modern), approaches (political, economic, social or cultural), or themes (environment, religion, power and empire). We are one of the only UK universities where you can specialise in Landscape History. Our teaching, undertaken in a stimulating and supportive learning environment, has been given a teaching satisfaction rating of 98 per cent in the 2017 Guardian University Guide.

Research

99 per cent of research within the School of History is internationally recognised, with 77 per cent rated 4* (world leading) or 3* (internationally excellent) according to the Research Excellence Framework (REF2014), a major Government analysis of university research quality. Additionally History at UEA ranked third in the UK for research intensity after Oxford and Cambridge in the Times Higher Education REF 2014 Subject Rankings.

Employability

We provide the skills and support that ensure our graduates are highly employable, such as the ability to communicate with precision and to research, analyse and present data on complex subjects. We also provide our students with the opportunity to secure valuable and relevant experience with a variety of employers through our internship programme.
