University of Dundee crest

The University of Dundee (abbreviated as Dund. for post-nominals) is a public research university based in the city and Royal burgh of Dundee on the east coast of the central Lowlands of Scotland. Founded in 1881 the institution was, for most of its early existence, a constituent college of the University of St Andrews alongside United College and St Mary’s College located in the town of St Andrews itself. Following significant expansion, the University of Dundee became an independent body in 1967 whilst retaining much of its ancient heritage and governance structure. Since its independence, the university has grown to become an internationally recognised centre for research.

The main campus of the university is located in Dundee’s West End which contains many of the university’s teaching and research facilities; the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Dundee Law School and the Dundee Dental Hospital and School. The university has additional facilities at Ninewells Hospital – containing its School of Medicine, Perth Royal Infirmary – which houses a clinical research centre, and in Kirkcaldy, Fife – containing part of its school of Nursing and Midwifery.

It is ranked within the top 250 universities in the world and 24th in the UK by national university rankings.

We are doing that in all sorts of ways. The teaching we offer forms part of a student experience that is consistently rated among the best in the UK, and is producing graduates who are ready to help solve real-world problems and become future leaders across society.

We carry out research that has a real impact on people’s lives, here in Scotland and around the world. We are focused on shaping the future through innovative design, promoting the sustainable use of global resources, and improving social, physical and cultural wellbeing.

The University has set out its vision. It defines our core purpose as the transformation of lives, working locally and globally through the creation, sharing and application of knowledge. In so doing we intend to become Scotland’s leading university.

Achieving this goal will be demanding and will take a long time – perhaps 25 years. To start us off on that journey we have developed a route map for the first five years. This is our University Strategy 2017. It sets out in some detail what we plan to do as we set our transformational course.

The Strategy considers the challenges and opportunities which lie before us and sets out our response. We identify actions, objectives and performance indicators. We address three broad categories of service which we provide:

  • Learning and Teaching
  • Research and
  • Wider Impact

and also consider two vital cross-cutting themes

  • Internationalisation and
  • Employability, Enterprise and Entrepreneurship

Finally, the Strategy identifies four enabling themes:

  • People
  • Information
  • Estate and
  • Financial Sustainability

The Strategy is a living document. It will guide our work until 2017, informing more detailed plans and projects, and it will be regularly reviewed to ensure its objectives remain relevant and fresh.
