Scottish Graduate Entry Medicine Programme (ScotGEM)

We are delighted that the Scottish Government has chosen the Medical Schools at the Universities of St Andrews and Dundee, in partnership with University of the Highlands and Islands, to run a graduate entry programme for Medicine, with the first cohort entering in 2018.

ScotGEM will be a unique and innovative 4-year graduate entry medical programme to be run jointly between the Universities of St Andrews and Dundee in partnership with the University of the Highlands and Islands and NHS Scotland. It will be tailored to meet the contemporary and future needs of the NHS in Scotland, include training opportunities in NHS Fife, Tayside, Highland and Dumfries and Galloway and has the full support of Scottish Government.

ScotGEM will capitalise on the existing strengths of medical teaching in the Universities and the two local health boards in Fife and Tayside. In addition, our collaboration with NHS Highland, NHS Dumfries and Galloway and the UHI will enable us to develop a programme that is truly distinctive, by offering training that is consistent with the pattern of care based in the community, using placements which will extend into the independent and third sectors. ScotGEM will afford training that is ideal for those interested in a generalist career working in underserved areas of the service and will offer extended opportunities to train in remote and rural areas.

The ScotGEM programme will be tailored to the specific needs of graduates, taking account of the experience acquired during their initial degree, leading to a Primary Medical Qualification (PMQ) that is jointly awarded by St Andrews and Dundee and meets GMC requirements.

ScotGEM is planning to matriculate its first cohort of students in September 2018. Both Universities are working with the GMC to obtain accreditation of the ScotGEM programme. We will publish more details in due course.
