English for International Students

We offer academic English tuition to International students. We run a variety of language courses throughout the academic year to help you get the most out of your studies.

If you have not yet met the English entry requirements for a degree programme at the university, we offer Foundation English Programmes and Pre-sessional Programmes.

If you are currently a student on a degree programme and would like to continue developing your English language skills, we have a range of In-sessional classes which run throughout the academic year.

In-sessional English

Once you have begun your course, you can develop your English language and academic skills with our 10-week programme. It is free to all international students. You will need to take a placement test to determine the level of support you need.

Registration for semester 2 is now closed. The next entry point is September 2017. Details will be posted here closer to the time.

Studying in another language is challenging. This programme is designed to help you with the language and academic skills you need to meet that challenge.

Students attending the in-sessional programme typically choose one or two from the following classes:

  • academic writing
  • academic speaking
  • academic listening and note taking
  • language forum
  • vocabulary building
  • pronunciation
  • grammar review

You will get a certificate for 80% attendance.

English language requirements

All courses at the University of Dundee are taught in English.

If your first language is not English you will need to demonstrate that you meet the University’s English language requirement for the degree you have applied for. You can do this in a number of ways:

  • Take a proficiency test such as a UKVI approved IELTS
  • Provide a previous qualification that confirms your English level
  • Successfully pass the University of Dundee language course
  • Provide evidence that you meet one of our English language exemptions.

Details about acceptable tests, the most common qualifications we recognise (with the required grades), and exemptions are listed below.

If you have not taken an English language test yet or do not have a current valid test score, you can still apply for courses, but any offer you receive will normally be conditional on meeting our language requirement.

The University will need to see and verify your English language qualifications. Where possible, you should send a copy of your certificate with your application, if not you will be given an opportunity to upload proof of your English language to our Applicant Portal.
