Dress Code and Guest Attire

Graduation is a formal occasion. As such, there is a dress code for both graduating students and their guests.

Males should wear dark trousers and white shirt. Formal dress includes a bow tie (black or white) but you may wear a normal dark coloured tie.

Females should wear a dark skirt or trousers and white blouse.

We’d always encourage Graduating students to wear national dress if you prefer. You would then wear your Academic Robes on top of this.

You will have to climb a small flight of stairs and then walk across a large stage in front of 2500 people. Make sure you choose appropriate shoes for graduation.

If you’re dressed inappropriately you may not be allowed to cross the stage to be capped by the Chancellor. In this case you will graduate in absentia.

We know Graduation is an important day for friends and family. Guests should attend in formal or national dress.

Hire your Academic Robes

You must wear the correct gown and hood for your degree. Otherwise we will not allow you to cross the stage and you will be graduated in absence.

What happens at the ceremony itself?

Caird Hall

One of the most magnificent halls in Scotland provides the venue for Dundee University Graduation Ceremonies. Visit the Caird Hall website for venue information and access information. Also see Disabled access to the Caird Hall.

Need Somewhere to Stay?

There is a large choice of accommodation in Dundee. Dundee is also close to some of the most breathtaking scenery in Scotland and excellent local transport means you can widen the area where you stay.

Visit Scotland provides suggestions for tourists and also accommodation.

Official Photographers

The University’s official photographers are Ede and Ravenscroft, they will be the only photographers in attendance at the Caird Hall.

Photography queues on Graduation day can be lengthy and as this is a day for you to spend celebrating with your family and friends, Ede and Ravenscroft have decided to open photography studios each afternoon (including Tuesday 20 June for those graduating on Wednesday) from 16:00-18:00 in the Marryat Hall, within the Caird Hall. This means you can pick up your gown, exchange your eVouchers and have your photographs taken at the same time. You will have to wear your graduation outfit for the photographs but will leave Graduation day free to spend with the people that are important to you.
