A Welcome from the Dean

School of Nursing and Health Sciences

    I am delighted to welcome you to the School of Nursing and Health Sciences at the University of Dundee. Our aim is to be an international leader in developing healthcare graduates who will then influence improvement in health outcomes through education and research. We work closely with our partners in practice to support this generation of nurses and health professionals with the knowledge and skills to make a difference, locally and globally.

In addition to our range of undergraduate and postgraduate education for nurses and health professionals, we have focused programmes in the areas of infection prevention and control and mother and infant health.

The School is recognised as one of the top Schools in Scotland in relation to its research portfolio, with over 85% of research being recognised internationally. The portfolio is focused in the areas of health and well-being and is being undertaken in collaboration with clinical colleagues, both nationally and internationally.

The School has an excellent international profile and reputation which has grown significantly over the years as a result of the distance learning education that is provided to our students across the world. This allows us to deliver programmes in different settings as well as offering students the opportunity to study in Dundee.

This year we are delighted to see the excellent results in the National Student Survey with 95% of our students satisfied with their teaching programme.


Nursing at Dundee ranked 6th in the UK in the 2016 National Student Survey.  Overall satisfaction rate 95%.We offer degrees in mental health nursing, adult nursing, and children’s nursing, including opportunities to complete an honours degree or masters degree in 3 years for suitably qualified applicants.

Mental Health Nursing – BSc, BSc (hons) and MSc

Mental Health Nurses work in the complex and fascinating field of mental health and the management of mental health loss. The programme provides students with the ability to assess, manage and treat clients with mental health issues and their carers.

Adult Nursing – BSc, BSc (hons) and MSc

Adult nurses care for all those over the age of sixteen years who have a physical health problem. Nurses work as part of a multidisciplinary team in a wide variety of settings including hospitals, the community and within the independent sector providing long-term care.

Children’s Nursing – BSc, BSc (hons) and MSc

The role of the child nurse includes promoting health, minimising illness and protecting children who are vulnerable. They also work with the parents and other family members of the children in their care.

Choose nursing at the University of Dundee – apply through UCAS

Study nursing at the University of Dundee School of Nursing and Health Sciences in adult, children’s or mental health nursing.

If you already have a degree in another subject, you may be able to complete an MSc, and get nursing registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, in 3 years. We also offer honours degrees in 3 years to applicants who qualify for year 2 entry to University.

Our Undergraduate programmes are rated very highly by our students, with overall satisfaction of 95% in 2016. The University has excellent teaching facilities, and you will spend significant time in our clinical skills centres. All programmes provide both an academic and professional qualification – registration as a nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
