I joined the University in 2011 after almost 20 years at Northumbria University in Newcastle, where I was Dean of the School of Law. My first degree was in English, and I initially worked for the Citizens Advice Bureau Service in London for almost a decade before qualifying as a solicitor and working for a leading human rights law practice in London.

When I started at Northumbria I remained in practice as a lawyer but retrained as a barrister, specialising in human rights and public law. I remained a door tenant at ParkLane Plowden, a leading civil chambers in the North East, until 2015.
