University Of Cumbria Zoology

We offer one of the few courses that allow you to become an expert in the identification of British Wildlife, something that employers are desperate for. You’ll have unrivalled access to the widest range of animals possible in the breath-taking Cumbrian countryside. Through a mix of lectures and field work in the UK and abroad, we’ll teach you all the relevant skills to go into a career in zoology or related fields.

You’ll start by gaining a broad view of zoological concerns, including molecular and cellular biology, animal form and function, and conservation practice which involves visiting a wide range of habitats in search of wildlife. Your second year will teach you professional-standard survey and research techniques which you put into practice during a fieldwork module, currently delivered in West Africa (where your project can add to the knowledge of some of the world’s rarest species and help conserve them). The third year will involve a year-long research project, which can be a practical project utilising the skills you’ve developed during the course.

Our location in Cumbria offers the widest possible range of fascinating species to study, letting you tackle some of the most important, current zoological issues. Alternatively, you can study species abroad in the summer between second and third year and analyse the data during term-time for your project. We can help you arrange this through our global links with researchers studying e.g. whales, bears, snow leopards, birds and monkeys.

We won’t just teach you about Zoology-we’ll turn you into a Zoologist! Designed by experts with a long history of industry involvement, our course will teach you everything you need to become a professional in the field. You’ll work in state-of-the-art laboratories and have access to excellent learning facilities to provide the perfect starting point for your research. Our wide range of modules will cover everything to do with the study of animals, helping you realise where your specialities lie when choosing future employment.

Budding zoologists will love the sheer range of habitats and rare species available in Cumbria! We make full use of our location in the heart of the Lake District to act as a natural classroom, looking at everything from high mountains and deep lakes to wide-open estuaries, forests and sea cliffs. You’ll have extensive chance to explore and research around our unique location, so if you want to get well involved in Zoology, you won’t find much better than what we have to offer.
