First year modules

The two dance modules in the first year and core dance techniques and complimentary dance techniques where you will begin by consolidating your skills before actively working on enhancing these skills and the skills associated with dance to performance level.

Preparing for your course

Being fit and healthy will allow you to cope with the demands of the course more effectively so spend some time exercising and building up your resistance to the pesky Freshers Flu.

We recommend that students visit as many performances of musical theatre (amateur or professional) as possible. Please read reviews of shows, and get an idea of what is happening in the dance world.

Pre-course reading

Immersing yourself in the current trends in dance is very important. Have a look at ‘The Stage’ to get a feel for what is going on, and you need to know what is going on in the USA too. Read online reviews of shows and observe works of Pina Bausch, Merce Cunningham, DV8, Jasmin Vardemon, Vincent Dance Theatre and Matthew Bourne’s ‘New Adventures’ company.

The theatre trip is still being confirmed but should take place during the first semester and cost no more than £30 each.

Please keep the same amount of money to pay for a similar trip in the second year.

We appreciate that collectively this is a significant amount of money, but it is essential that you experience as much live theatre during your degree as possible.
