The Department for Education has a Get Into Teaching section with information about different routes into teaching to help you decide between school-based and university-based training options.  There is also more information about the Teach First scheme which offers a two-year Leadership Development Programme for those interested in an employment-based route into teaching.

If you are interested in teaching students over the age of 16, have a look at our Secondary PGCE pages.

Postgraduate courses

For guidance on Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) applications please visit our PGCE webpages.

We also offer a range of MA degrees.

You will be able to find a complete listing of courses, vacancies and entry requirements along with full details of the application process on the new UCAS – Teacher Training website.

Both Target Jobs and Prospects have a comprehensive guide that contains everything you need to know about applications and PGCE routes into teaching with general advice on applying for a PGCE and specifically on Primary or Secondary teaching roles.  There is also helpful advice on other education-related jobs and their entry requirements.

School-based routes

School Direct has replaced the GTP employment based route for teacher training.  There are two separate School Direct training options:

  • School Direct Training Programme is for high-quality graduates who want to be part of a school team from day one. This is open to all graduates and is funded by tuition fees paid by the trainee, who may be eligible to receive a bursary from the Teaching Agency
  • School Direct Training Programme (salaried) is an employment-based route for high-quality experienced graduates with at least three years’ work experience. You will earn a salary while you train

You can search for which schools offer the School Direct scheme on the UCAS – Teacher Training website.

Early Years

We offer the Early Years Initial Teacher Training Graduate Employment based route which is for existing graduates in an early years setting who require further training and further experience to demonstrate the Early Years Teacher standards, or a graduate newly recruited to an early years setting in order to undertake the course. Explore our Early Years webpages.

Applying for Courses

Applications to PGCE, SCITT and School Direct all go through one website: UCAS-Teacher Training.
