The Chester Centre for Islamic Studies (CCIS) promotes the academic study of Islam at the University of Chester.

Based in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies, it engages in multidisciplinary research in Islamic Studies. Its particular aim is to make current theories and methods in Religious Studies relevant to the academic study of Islam. Prof Oliver Scharbrodt is the Director of the Centre. Working with Muslim communities and organisations, the Centre is involved in various outreach activities to make research accessible to stakeholders outside of academia.

Research – (CCIS)

The Chester Centre for Islamic Studies (CCIS) has a unique research profile in terms of its research agenda and methodological orientation.

Members of the Centre primarily engage in two areas of research:

  • Shia Islam with particular focus on transnational and diasporic forms of contemporary Twelver Shia Islam
  • Muslims in Europe with particular focus on cross-European comparative studies

The Centre welcomes inquiries and proposals from prospective doctoral students and post-docs in these and other areas in the field of Islamic Studies.

The Centre seriously engages with current theories and methods in Religious Studies which inform both the historical and contemporary approaches taken by its researchers. Members of the Centre employ historical and textual approaches to Islamic Studies and also undertake ethnographic research on everyday lived experiences of Muslims.
