Foundation Years

Our Foundation School offers courses that will enable you to progress to a wide variety of undergraduate degrees across the University. In addition to the subject-specific modules for the Foundation Year, we will introduce you to the academic study skills to be successful during your further studies at the University. You will also have the opportunity to focus on a topic related to your chosen undergraduate degree.

Extracurricular enrichment activities are offered at the Foundation School to ensure that you can make the most of your time as a student with us. You will be encouraged to let us know which activities you are keen for us to add to the enrichment calendar.

Our Foundation Year courses are designed to introduce you to topics within the following areas at the University:

Lecturers will provide a broad overview of their disciplines to ensure you have a comprehensive knowledge base to prepare you for your next level of study.

You will also learn how to use University resources and be introduced to the academic departments you will be progressing to. The Foundation Year will develop your interest in the academic discipline you are preparing to study for. This is complemented by attendance to events and taster lectures in departments and faculties across the University.

Features of our Foundation Year courses:

  • The Foundation School is located in the heart of Chester’s city centre. Open-access computer facilities will be available, and you will have further access to all of the University’s campus resources.
    We will focus on a communicative approach to teaching and learning to ensure you can participate fully in classroom-based activities. Learning activities include use of real-world scenarios, seminars, lectures, debate, case study analysis, and group and individual projects.

Course Duration:

Foundation Years are part of specific Single Honours degree courses. The length of study will be 4 years full time.

Course Fee:

The fee for the Foundation Year is £6,000 for 2016. The fee for the subsequent three years of degree study is £9,000 per year.

Progression:

Upon successful completion of the Foundation Year, you will be able to progress to your chosen undergraduate degree in one of the following faculties:

  • Faculty of Business and Management
  • Faculty of Social Science
  • Faculty of Arts and Media
  • Faculty of Science and Engineering
  • Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Clinical Sciences
