University of Birmingham Kayak Club

We are a very active club that aims to bring people together of all kayaking abilities and improve their skills. We cater for all skill levels from complete novices to experts. Regular pool sessions are run to teach the basic skills needed to get out into white water rivers and play canoe polo. All our coaching is done within the club, and we are very lucky to have enthusiastic qualified coaches, as well as some very competent river leaders. The club is involved in four competitive disciplines, the BUCS recognised White Water Race, Slalom, Canoe Polo and the National Student Rodeo. The club frequently ventures to rivers all over the UK and organises two longer trips every year to Scotland over the Easter and to the Alps during the summer. Our various polo teams compete in many polo tournaments throughout the year.

Interesting facts

  • Our club takes part in various different kayaking disciplines including whitewater river running, canoe polo, kayak surfing, and freestyle.
  • We undertake two major trips each year, one to Scotland in Easter and then to the beautiful French Alps in early summer
  • The oldest recorded kayaks are thought to have been constructed by the north American Inuits around 4000 years ago. They were made out of stretched animal skins…our club kayaks are a bit more modern though!
