University of Birmingham Graduation

Degree Congregations at the University of Birmingham date back to 1901 and are held in the Great Hall at the heart of campus.  Attended by nearly 30,000 graduates and guests each year, these events are the highlight of the University calendar and represent for many students the conclusion of their studies at Birmingham.

What to wear

Degree Congregations are formal occasions and graduands are expected to dress accordingly.  In addition to formal business-wear, graduands must present themselves wearing the appropriate academic dress (robes) for the degree they are to be awarded.  Academic dress should be ordered from the University’s gown hire suppliers Ede and Ravenscroft.

Most graduands choose to hire their robes for the day, however you can purchase the robes if you wish.  Please note that academic dress for Degree Congregations taking place in July 2017 should be ordered by Friday 16 June 2017 at the latest.

Travel and parking

Degree Congregations are held on our Edgbaston campus.  For the most up to date information about travelling to the University and for comprehensive directions, please visit our directions pages which contain detailed directions, maps and information concerning roadworks around the campus.

Collecting your tickets

Graduand and guest tickets should be collected from the Ticket Desk in Bramall Music Building (Building R12 on the Edgbaston Campus Map) on the day of your graduation.  To avoid long queues, we politely ask that only graduands queue for tickets.

The Ticket Desk opens at the following times:

  • 7.45am for the 9.45am Degree Congregation
  • 8.15am for the 10.15am Degree Congregation
  • 10.15am for the 12.15pm Degree Congregation
  • 11.30am for the 1.30pm Degree Congregation
  • 1.00pm for the 3.00pm Degree Congregation
  • 2.15pm for the 4.15pm Degree Congregation
  • 3.45pm for the 5.45pm Degree Congregation

Each graduand is allocated two guest tickets, which will be given to you when you collect your own ticket.  Remember to bring your student ID card with you to collect your tickets, or if you no longer have it either your passport or driving license.  Should there be any additional tickets available for your Degree Congregation then they will be allocated on the day, on a first-come first-served basis.

Collecting your academic dress

Once graduands have collected their tickets, academic dress (robes) can be collected from the Gowning Area in the Avon Room in University Centre (Building R23 on the Edgbaston Campus Map).  Remember to bring the order confirmation with you to collect your academic dress.
