Writing Research

The Writing Centre’s own professional and research activity includes:

  • research into, and publication on, academic writing
  • participation at academic writing conference events and initiatives to provide a strong theoretical base, on which to ground our practice.

Writing tutorials

We can help you with all aspects of your writing, including:

  • planning and structuring writing in the context of your academic discipline
  • presenting a clear and cohesive argument based on critical evidence and analysis
  • contextualising citations and references
  • developing a fluent and expressive style appropriate to your academic discipline
  • developing your reflective and evaluative skills to enhance your writing
  • appropriate use of grammar, vocabulary and punctuation.

Please book a one-to-one tutorial on campus, with one of our writing experts, using our online booking system. If you are a PhD student, then please email us to arrange a tutorial.

Each tutorial will last 50 minutes and you will be able to use this time to discuss a piece of your writing. To make the most of your tutorial, you may find it helpful to:

  • think in advance what you would like to discuss with your tutor
  • upload your work onto Moodle by 12.00pm at the latest, at least TWO working days before your tutorial booking. An unfinished draft can be uploaded. ┬áIn the absence of a draft, guiding questions for the tutor can be uploaded. If neither are received by 12.00pm at least two working days before the tutorial time, the tutorial will be automatically cancelled
  • check your assignment deadlines so that you allow sufficient time to review and redraft your writing
  • bring along any additional information about your assignment including marking criteria and/or any feedback you have already received.

To help us to develop the academic writing support we offer, we would welcome your feedback (e.g. the type of support, the timing of it, or the tutor advice received).
