University Of Aberdeen Kilau
Cafe and takeaway in historic Old Aberdeen. Serving fresh, healthy food, speciality coffee and indulgent homebakes. Opened in December 2009, kilau is an off-shoot of the now closed, original store in the city centre. The cafe boasts a peaceful walled garden with outside seating and is popular with the local population as well as tourist and students from the University of Aberdeen. The baristas make coffee to an exceptional standard and are passionate about all forms of brewing. The espresso blend is an exclusive roast of hand selected beans roasted, locally by the award winning MacBeans of Little Belmont Street. All our food is prepared fresh on the premises, with the chefs taking particular pride in their soups and pasta sauces.
Great quality coffee in the nicest part of Aberdeen, directly opposite the wonderful mediaeval buildings of the university campus. They have a branch in the more modern city centre, too.
The review of this coffee shop will appear in our book on tea and coffee in the UK’s cathedral towns and cities. The ebook is now available, with a shorter print version out this autumn. Here’s the link to all our books…
Coffee here is excellent. The local MacBeans coffee roasters gets things off to a good start, but once at Kilau, the baristas all seem to know their stuff, too. Rich, creamy cappuccino well-presented, both in the restaurant upstairs and the more informal coffee shop downstairs. There’s a slightly different menu of cakes depending on whether you’re in the restaurant or the coffee shop: grapefruit, lime & poppy seed was top of the bill upstairs, with cheesecake and chocolate brownies playing good support roles. Downstairs, you can get a sandwich, and the bundt cakes looked the best. Gluten-free and vegan options available too.

The Old Aberdeen branch is right on the High Street opposite the university; the Little Belmont Street branch was actually very hard to find: it is a little doorway across the road from the museum-looking building, but it was closed for renovation when we called.
