Teesside University Jamie Dornan
Did you know that the film’s star Jamie Dornan – who plays the dark business magnate Christian Grey – is a former Teesside University student?
Yes, we know it’s tenuous – but for a brief period he was one of our own.
Star Jamie Dornan was a Teesside University marketing student in 2002.
The 32-year-old dropped out of university after a year to focus on his then passion rugby.
Then, at 20, he was spotted by a modelling agency in Belfast who suggested he audition for Channel 4’s Model Behaviour.
He didn’t win – but was put in touch with celebrity photographer Bruce Weber and his career took off becoming a top male face.
Jamie has dated Keira Knightley – and famously posed in his pants for Calvin Klein Jeans alongside Eva Mendes.
He is now a dad of one to a seven-month-old daughter and married to actress Amelia Warner.
The university declined to comment.
You can catch the film at Middlesbrough’s Cineworld from February 13 next year.

Dornan was born in Holywood, County Down, Northern Ireland, and grew up in the suburbs of Belfast. He has two older sisters: Liesa, who works for Disney in London, and Jessica, a fashion designer based in Falmouth, England. His father, Professor Jim Dornan, is an obstetrician and gynaecologist who had also considered becoming an actor.
Dornan was 16 when his mother, Lorna, died from pancreatic cancer. Dornan is a first cousin, twice removed, of actress Greer Garson. His grandparents on both sides of his family were Methodist lay preachers.
He attended and boarded at Methodist College Belfast, where he played rugby and participated in the drama department. He later attended Teesside University but dropped out and moved to London to train as an actor
